Madre Hija Design is a contemporary handwoven jewelry brand made by Textile Designer Caro Toro. We design statement pieces out of upcycled vintage beads, Japanese and Czech seed beads, fair trade beads and semiprecious stone beads. Our intention is to make beautiful, elegant and bold jewelry through conscious design that takes in regard our natural world and its resources. Madre Hija Design holds pride in its sustainable practices, we purchase rare novelty, vintage, hand carved and fair trade beads, as well as supporting local shops. We create handmade to order in order to reduce waste and our carbon footprint. All our mailers are made from 100% recyclable materials and made in the US. We like to create conscious design and will commit to only using sustainable materials that do not endanger the planet or any living species.
Caro Toro is the artist behind Madre Hija Design, she graduated with a bachelors degree in Fine Arts from the University of Puerto Rico, then followed her post-graduate studies in New York where she attended The Fashion Institute of Technology, studying textile and surface design. Learning many techniques in weaving she fell in love with the process and its intricacies. Later in life weaving became her meditative practice that little by little is finding its place in the industry of jewelry. She is a native Puertorican that currently lives in the city of Austin Texas with her husband and two kids.
